The search for Yorkshire’s brightest and bravest young people in 2016 got off to a flying start with the launch of the Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards, sponsored by McCormicks Solicitors of Harrogate.

The 24th Awards will recognise the achievements of outstanding young people in the region aged under 35 who have made an impact, whether nationally, regionally or locally. To nominate a potential winner, just visit the Awards website at www.yorkshireyoungachievers.co.uk or contact Sonia Jones at McCormicks Solicitors on 01423 530630.

The Awards are organised by the Yorkshire Young Achievers Foundation and have raised more than £1 million to support young people in Yorkshire.

Awards Chairman Peter McCormick OBE said: “We have already seen some great achievements by young people from our region this year and I suspect there will be more to come at the Rio Olympics. The Awards are a way to celebrate such achievements while raising funds to help other young people in Yorkshire to achieve their own successes.”

On hand to launch the 2016 Awards was the 2015 Unsung Hero winner and a young grant recipient. Hannah Wilks took the Unsung Hero Award for her work with Marie Curie Cancer Care, while six-year-old Baila Lester received a grant towards a special tricycle designed to help improve her mobility after operations to her legs.

Anyone can nominate a potential winner and the closing date for entries is Friday 9 September. The winners will be announced at the Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards dinner on Thursday 17 November at the Leeds United Centenary Pavilion. Tickets for the dinner are also now on sale and are available through the website.

There are eight categories as follows:

  • Personality of the Year (sponsored by Rudding Park)
  • Youngster of the Year (DFS)

THREE WHEELS FOR BAILA THANKS TO YORKSHIRE YOUNG ACHIEVERS FOUNDATION GRANT

A six-year-old Leeds girl has a new tricycle to help with her mobility, thanks to a grant from the Yorkshire Young Achievers Foundation.

Baila Lester was born with a rare combination of two disabilities, both of which affect her mobility, and has undergone numerous operations to help correct the positions of her legs and feet as well as physiotherapy to aid her overall strength and development.

A special frame was fitted to her right leg and foot last year in an attempt to correct their position and, once this was removed it became vital to use her legs so that they did not revert back to their original position.

The Moortown family identified a special therapy tricycle, designed to make pedalling easier, which would help with Baila’s recovery and applied to the Yorkshire Young Achievers Foundation for a grant towards its cost.
Trustee Richard Stroud was able to use the knowledge he has built in the role to liaise direct with the suppliers to achieve a favourable price.

He said: “It is marvellous to see Baila able to get around on her own. Not only is the tricycle an important part of her physical rehabilitation but it is something she really loves so we have achieved two benefits with one grant!”

Eventually Baila will have a similar correcting frame fitted to her left leg, with the new tricycle aiding in recovery again.
